Tax makes the parcel count matter more in 2026. The US ended its de minimis exemption for Chinese goods on May 2, 2025 (and for everyone on August 29), and the EU began charging €3 per item category on parcels under €150 on July 1, 2026. Five separate AliExpress parcels can mean five separate charges; one Sugargoo parcel on a tax-included line means one.

Verdict: One or two items: AliExpress. Five or more, especially clothes or trainers: one Sugargoo parcel.

AliExpress buyer protection against Sugargoo QC

AliExpress's official buyer-protection page is genuinely useful:

It protects you after delivery. Sugargoo protects you before shipping: you see QC photos at the warehouse and can request a return within five days, before paying international postage. Its insurance (1–4% of the insured value) then covers loss and customs seizure in transit. Which matters more depends on the item — for shoes and fitted clothing, seeing the real thing first beats returning it across the world.

Where AliExpress sits in the Alibaba family

Alibaba runs several marketplaces, and AliExpress is the only one built for consumers abroad. Alibaba.com sells to businesses; 1688, Taobao and Tmall sell inside China — which is why Sugargoo exists. Many AliExpress stores are the same factories or resellers you'd find on 1688 or Taobao, with prices adjusted for international shipping. WorldFirst's example: an item at $8 on AliExpress can sit at $3–4 on 1688.

Two regulatory notes. The European Commission opened Digital Services Act proceedings against AliExpress in November 2023 over illegal products, and the US Trade Representative listed it as a Notorious Market in 2022. Neither stops you buying, but branded listings are more likely to disappear and parcels more likely to be checked.

Which items to buy where

Most spreadsheet finds live on Weidian, which AliExpress doesn't carry, so the practical question is usually which items to buy where. A sensible split: everyday unbranded goods — cables, tools, phone accessories — on AliExpress, where free returns and direct shipping suit them; clothing, trainers and bags from a spreadsheet through Sugargoo, where QC photos and a single parcel matter.

Sizing: AliExpress charts against Sugargoo QC

Sizing is where the two routes differ most for clothing. AliExpress listings usually carry a size chart, and the free-return window covers a wrong size on eligible items — but the return trip is yours to organise, and underwear and socks are excluded. With Sugargoo, the size problem is caught earlier: ask in the order remark for a tape-measure photo of the chest width or insole, check it against a garment you own, and request an exchange while the item is still in China. Chinese sizes usually run about one size small, so the size converter is worth a minute before ordering either way. For trainers in particular, a measured insole beats any chart.
